LIMITATIONS

Yesterday, I was outraged and disgusted by the Oscar Grant verdict. I don't usually find myself writing about current events but this case really got under my skin. I had to start furiously typing.

It's interesting to see how I limit what I do and don't write about. I see myself as a certain "type" of writer -- one who doesn't write about what's happening in the real world in real time. Since I'd like to expand my writerly horizons -- I need to reconsider my conscious and unconscious limitations.

I'm not alone; most writers stay in a particular genre/style as they develop their voice. Generally, I think this is good practice for a beginning writer, but I am at the point where I feel the need to take my writing in different directions.
